Nicholas Noyes Sr. Deacon Sr.

Nicholas Noyes Sr. was born 23 Nov 1614 and died 23 Nov 1701. Family-tree notes describe him as a young man when he arrived with the new settlers at Parker River, Newbury, in 1635. He is said to have been the first of the settlers to step or leap ashore at the landing site.

In 1637, Nicholas reportedly walked the forty miles from Newbury to Cambridge to qualify as a freeman and voter. He was chosen as a deacon of the First Parish Church of Newbury when the church was gathered.

About 1640, Nicholas married Mary Cutting, daughter of Capt. John Cutting, a ship master, and his wife Mary. Nicholas and Mary Noyes had children born in Newbury: Mary, born in 1641; Hannah, 1643; John, 1645; Nicholas, later identified as Reverend Nicholas, 1647; Cutting, 1649; Sarah, 1653; Timothy, 1655; James, 1657; Abigail, 1659; Rachel, 1661; and Thomas, 1663.

A historical marker is said to stand near the Parker River landing location in Newbury. The family-tree notes describe it as a boulder on the left bank of the river when facing toward the Atlantic from the Route 1A bridge.
