Isabella Chilton

Isabella Chilton was born on 8 January 1586 and died in 1658. She married Roger Chandler of Colchester, England, at Leyden, Holland, on 21 July 1615. Records cited in family research place the couple in Leyden in 1622 and later in Plymouth, Massachusetts, where Roger was taxed and became a freeman in 1633.

Isabella Chilton was born on 8 January 1586. On 21 July 1615, she married Roger Chandler, described as being from Colchester, England, in Leyden, Holland.

A Leyden tax poll dated 15 October 1622 listed “Rogier Chandelear,” his wife Isabel, and their children Samuel and Sara. This record places Isabella and Roger Chandler in Leyden with at least two children at that time.

According to the family notes, Roger and Isabella probably sailed to Plymouth, Massachusetts, in 1629 or 1630. Roger Chandler was taxed in Plymouth on 25 March 1633 and became a freeman in the same year. In 1665, the Plymouth court granted 150 acres to three unnamed daughters of Roger Chandler.

Isabella Chilton died in 1658.

The surviving family notes connect Isabella and Roger Chandler first with Leyden, Holland, and later with Plymouth, Massachusetts. The 1622 Leyden tax-poll entry records their household there, while the Plymouth tax and freeman references document Roger Chandler’s later presence in Plymouth.
